Stephen Quake Appointed as BRCCH Professor of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering

In August 2026, Stephen Quake, currently Professor at Stanford University (USA), will join the Basel Research Centre for Child Health (BRCCH) as a Full Professor in Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering. He will be affiliated with the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of the ETH Zurich, where he will continue his pioneering research at the intersection of microfluidics, in vitro diagnostics and single-cell omics.

Stephen Quake is a leading figure in the bioengineering field, who has translated advances in physics, engineering and biotechnology into clinical tools that have transformed healthcare for millions of patients worldwide. His work has revolutionized non-invasive diagnostic approaches, including prenatal tests to detect fetal aneuploidy or liquid biopsies to diagnose and monitor cancer.  More recently, he has spearheaded the Tabula Sapiens project, a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic atlas of human tissues describing cellular states of human health and disease. By combining high-resolution biological data with predictive computational models, this initiative seeks to uncover disease-specific cellular signatures, identify new biomarkers, and enable more accurate therapeutic strategies.

At the BRCCH, this expertise will contribute to addressing some of the most pressing unmet medical challenges affecting children worldwide. By advancing technologies for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and precision medicine, Stephen Quake’s work will bring more effective and individualized healthcare to future generations.
