Prof Niklaus Labhardt

Prof Niklaus Labhardt is the division head of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Basel. He is a physician trained in Switzerland, Cameroon and Lesotho specializing in infectious diseases and tropical medicine with a master’s in international health. Since his obtainment of an SNSF Eccellenza Professorship grant, he has held a position as a senior infectious disease doctor at University Hospital Basel and led the “HIV and Chronic Disease Care” research group at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). His research group’s work embraces clinical, epidemiological, molecular and implementation research focusing on HIV, HIV comorbidities and non-communicable diseases in Southeastern Africa and Switzerland. He is the sponsor/chief-investigator for several published or ongoing randomized controlled trials addressing questions around community-based HIV testing and care, improvement of the care cascade, cost-effective differentiated service delivery models and treatment failure in persons living with HIV and/or other chronic conditions in resource-limited settings. As President of the Board of the Swiss not-for-profit organization SolidarMed, he is committed to improving health for people living in rural areas in Subsaharan Africa.
